Valuable Experience in this Summer Teen Volunteer Leadership Program

    Hi, I’m Michael and I’m here to tell you about my experience at the joint summer program organized by Asian GOP and Americans for Prosperity summer program.

    At first all I knew about the program was that we were going to do something civics related. Civics being the subject I disliked the most in school made me not want to attend the program. But after a while, my parents convinced me to try attending the program. On the first day, we were instructed how to make the phone calls and started making calls. These phone calls usually had the general idea of getting people to take a survey and patching them through to an office or important person. To make calls we used a program called i360 call. At first, I didn’t get many takes because I was inexperienced at this and we also had technical difficulties which didn’t make it any better. But over time I gained confidence and got more takes.  I slowly got better at it.

    Walking was a fun activity for me because like phone banking we would interact with people. This came to me easily because I have plenty of experience on walking up to random people for fundraising activities from my school, Boy Scout troop, and many other places which I attend. With my personal experience of talking to groups of people taking surveys were quite easy once I knew what the topic was. This activity is called to canvass which basically knocks on doors and taking surveys face to face with people. Normally we would find a walk book in our area and go to every marked house and try to get a survey. It was interesting to learn what people thought about the topics which included taxes, insurance, school choice, elections, and so on. But, what surprised me the most is how much a single individual could affect others through actions.

    We also attended some meetings. Amongst the meetings, one is a city hall meeting where I met the mayor and learned about some of the city’s problems. There were consent agenda, board member interviews, and proposed plans and suggestions. All were put into action by common people like me who had just taken initiative to make a change. Another thing that happened during the time I attended the joint summer program is I made some friends. They helped me get better at the activities and made my stay at the joint summer program much better because they were usually cheerful and always made it enjoyable.

    To sum it up, during the joint summer program we made calls, canvassed, and learned about a bit of government. Among many reasons I liked this program, the more important ones include informing the common people, helping others, and learning about America. I really enjoyed this program and I hope you will too.

    Hello, this is Aaron Young. Here to tell you about calling random people for AFP. When you call, it will mostly just be voicemails or answering machine. Though sometimes people will pick up, then they will hang up. Rarely they will pick up and take a survey, then you will get to talk a legendary thing that guarantees a life full of longevity and happiness forever, and ever, and ever….

   I first heard about the Summer Teen program hold by Americans For Prosperity (AFP) and Chinese Community (Asian.GOP Palm Beach Chapter) was from Jasmine's Mom, I was both worried and curious. After I read the schedule, I worried more. I am not a social person, and the idea of calling strangers and knocking on their doors left me shaking in fear. On the first day, I felt left out from the group because I knew absolutely nothing about the program. After the first day though, I felt much better and wanted to come again. I met new friends with new perspective about strangers. I also learned more about the purpose of this program. We try to make America better through our efforts. We also learned about many aspects of America, and ask others opinions on current issues in our community. For example, taxation, government, and laws. This is one big reason I love This summer program. I learn more about America, and help people on the way. Also, I get to play with my friends there and learn together.

    At the beginning of my summer vacation, my mom told me about a summer Teen Volunteer Program that organized by Asian Community (Asian.GOP Palm Beach Chapter) and American for Prosperity (AFP). I didn't want to go because I wasn't into talking with people that I didn't know, but my mom took me anyway. I went to the summer program and I met some new friends, I felt joyful and delighted to go back. A lot of my mom's friends kept asking me about what we had done in the program. I told them about it and they felt interested and kind of wanted to attend too. In the summer program we learn about taxes, laws, congress, Constitution, and the three branches of government. We knock on people's doors and call them on the iPad to ask them about their opinions on issues that are affecting Americans daily life. We are told that our surveys will help Law-makers better understand people's opinions. Hopefully they will make better policies..

One day my mom told me I had to go with her to this Americans for Prosperity Program and I got a bit grumpy because the same day I was supposed to hang out with friends. Either way she still forced me to go. I am so thankful that she did what she did because from this program I have learned so much! Some things I learned were some ways to convince others to think the same way as you, to gain confidence in my views especially with making phone calls because some times some people may refuse to hear what you have to say but you cannot give up or else nothing is going to happen, and lastly I learned from a video that other people with opposite views will attack you, but to always stay calm no matter how right you think you are. This is why if you ever have the chance, I highly suggest you to join this program and if you have kids bring them along as well!
